Viet Nam in INTERNATIONAL U21 FOOTBALL CUP

Vietnam leads tourney after 3-0 win over Singapore

By defeating Singapore 3-0 in the latest game Friday, host Vietnam secures its leading place after two rounds of the international U-21 football cup in Nha Trang city.

Thanks to this win, Vietnam could claim the title of the International U-21 Football Thanh Nien Cup at Sunday’s last round if it holds Thailand to a draw.
All the three goals were scored in the second half, with Trong Hoang knocking in the opener in the 51st minute and Dinh Hiep driving home two others at 84th and 90th minutes.
With six points after two matches, the host team, which had lashed Myanmar 2-0 in the opener, climbed to top place, thanks to its greater goal spreads than Thailand, which edged Myanmar 1-0 yesterday and Singapore 4-3 three days before.
Meanwhile, the two losers Singapore and Myanmar will fight each other Sunday for the third place title.
Vietnamese striker Dinh Hiep – winner of Best Player title in Vietnam’s U-21 Football Championship last week – is now holding the tournament’s best scorer title with four goals.
The game
Heavy rain in the first half caused the grass to be slippery at Nha Trang Stadium, a mitigating factor for both teams.
The host, in white jerseys, proved a little stronger and made more attacks due to Vietnam’s increasing midfield confidence.
Vietnam brought many surprises to the visiting team with long passes on home side followed by multiple short passes when approaching the Singapore goal.
It proved to be sharp on wing attacks, especially on the right side.
Even though no clear goal opportunity was presented during the first half, both sides played spirited football with the ball shuttling between the two ends of the field.
After a goalless draw in the first 45 minutes, Vietnam pulled ahead just six minutes into the second half thanks to Trong Hoang.
He brought Vietnam to a 1-0 lead with a close-range header after a sharp counterattack.
The goal began with a long pass launched from the left wing by Dinh Hiep.
He curled the ball deep into Singaporean box where the striker Trong Hoang chose right position and headed home a blast that left the rival goalkeeper slack-jawed, watching the ball fly into the back of his net.
After the goal, Singapore pushed its formation up in an effort to seek an equalizer but remained unchanged in their tactic of using long passes in the two wings.
In the 84th minute, Singaporean defender Zilong committed a foul in his box while trying to stop a Vietnamese offensive, resulting with a penalty shot for Vietnam.
Dinh Hiep did not miss the chance to further the lead to 2-0, making his third goal in the tournament so far.
Minutes later Hiep fixed the match at 3-0 with his last-gasp goal, a skillful close-range shot driving the ball beyond the reach of the Singaporean goalie and nearly touching the goal frame’s right-hand post.

Event: "Ramos confirmed as Tottenham boss"

LONDON, England -- Juande Ramos was confirmed as head coach of Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday night in a deal lasting until the end of the 2010-11 season.

The Spaniard, 53, succeeds Martin Jol who was dismissed on Thursday night after Tottenham's poor start to the Premier League season.
Ramos, who quit Primera Liga Sevilla to take up the challenge at White Hart Lane, will take charge for the first time against Blackpool in the English League Cup on Wednesday night.
Development coach Clive Allen and youth team boss Alex Inglethorpe have prepared the side for Sunday's Premier League clash against Blackburn.
Ramos had two highly successful two years at Sevilla, where he won back-to-back UEFA Cups, a European Super Cup, a Copa del Rey and a Spanish Super Cup.
He also took the Andalucian side into the Champions League for the first time in its history.
Spurs sporting director Damien Comolli said: "Juande's arrival is great news for Tottenham Hotspur.
"He brings with him a wealth of experience, a proven track record and a winning pedigree. Now is the time for us to regroup and look to deliver the results and performances that everyone associated with the club wants to see."
Ramos, who stepped down as Sevilla coach on Friday night, earlier said that, for his family and his profession, it was impossible to to reject a move to London.
"My heart will remain in Nervion (where Sevilla's ground is located) but for my family and my profession it is impossible not to leave for London," Ramos said.
"After the excellent period that Sevilla has enjoyed fate has dictated that my path now takes me on the most ambitious challenge I have ever faced."
Ramos has lined up former Tottenham player Gus Poyet as his number two, not least to help the Spanish speaker with the language barrier.
"We have requested permission from Leeds United to speak to Gus Poyet in order to invite him to join the Club to work with Ramos alongside Alvarez," said a statement on the Tottenham Web

Chelsea 6 - 0 Man City

Didier Drogba scored twice as Chelsea thrashed Manchester City to claim their third successive victory in the league.

The hosts dominated throughout and were 2-0 up at the break as Michael Essien and Drogba got on the end of passes from the outstanding Frank Lampard.
Drogba made it 3-0 when Lampard's shot was saved, before Joe Cole, Salomon Kalou and Andriy Shevchenko netted.
Stephen Ireland and Martin Petrov came close for City in the first half but they were strangely subdued otherwise.

For Chelsea, however, it was a fifth straight win in all competitions, confirmation that the trauma of former boss Jose Mourinho's departure was well behind them.
They were simply too quick and too clever for a lethargic City side who gave them too much time on the ball and looked a shadow of the team which had also earned four victories in a row.

Chelsea did have an early scare when Ireland almost got on the end of Elano's delightful chip, which Petr Cech had to push past his left post.
Later in the half Petrov forced the Blues keeper to palm away a long-range free-kick, and Ireland should have done better when given time to pick his shot.
Other than that it was pretty much one-way traffic.
Essien gave the home side a deserved lead when Lampard slipped him in and it was no surprise when the England midfielder produced another quite sublime pass with the outside of his boot to send Drogba racing past Micah Richards for his third goal in as many games.

Chelsea were rampant and should have had a penalty moments later when Dietmar Hamann hacked down Drogba, while Joe Hart saved well from Kalou, who then appeared to be tripped by Richard Dunne in the box.
It proved academic, however, with the game over as a contest thanks to two further Chelsea strikes within 15 minutes of the restart.
Drogba hammered in his second after Lampard's shot had been brilliantly kept out by Hart and he squandered a fine opportunity to complete his hat-trick when Lampard unleashed another drive which Hart palmed away.
The powerful striker made amends with a cushioned header that sent Cole surging clear to finish with aplomb and pile on the misery for City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson.
With the visitors now concentrating on damage limitation, Chelsea could afford to bring on the out-of-sorts Shevchenko.
Chances continued to come their way and Essien carved open the shell-shocked City defence twice more to serve up opportunities which Kalou and Shevchenko gleefully accepted.

Football Match and Event in Weekend

Man Utd 4-1 Middlesbrough

Wayne Rooney scored one goal and superbly set up another as Manchester United overwhelmed Middlesbrough to move to the top of the Premier League.
United went ahead on three minutes when Nani drove in a cracking shot from 30 yards but Jeremie Aliadiere soon equalised with a precise header.
Nani robbed Stuart Downing and played in Rooney, to smash United's second.
After the break Carlos Tevez slotted in after a sublime Rooney back-heel and he added a fourth with a deflected shot.

United scored four goals in a fourth successive game - the first time in 100 years they have done so.
They knew a win would see them overtake leaders Arsenal - at least until Sunday when the Londoners play Liverpool.
And the hosts, who had Owen Hargreaves in their starting line-up for only the fourth time, wasted no time in setting about their task.
Nani decided to take the direct approach after picking the ball up deep in Boro's half. He skipped two challenges as he cut inside and then launched a dipping shot from 30 yards which beat Mark Schwarzer for height and pace.
It was a dream start for United but a nightmare for Boro, who went into the game desperately short of confidence after failing to win in their previous six matches.
And the visitors still appeared shell-shocked when Tevez broke through the middle but the Argentine did not quite get his attempted lob right and Schwarzer made a comfortable catch.

The script appeared set - a rampant United, with Nani and Ronaldo rampaging down the flanks and Rooney menacing through the middle about to rip through woeful opposition.
But Tuncay clearly felt a re-write was in order and promptly delivered the perfect cross - after turning stand-in left-back John O'Shea inside-out - for Aliadiere to head into the bottom left corner.
It was Aliadiere's first goal for Boro and it served to galvanise them. For the next 10 minutes, Boro held their own as United's early fluency deserted them.
The visitors even missed a great chance to take the lead as frequent threat Tuncay crossed in for Downing to head just wide of the right hand post.
Still, you felt once United smoothed out their now-stuttering approach play, Boro could find themselves in trouble once more.
And so it proved, as Ronaldo went close with a low shot from the left side of the box as United slipped through the gears.
Then Downing tried to trick his way past Nani on the edge of his area but had the ball nicked from his toes and played into the path of Rooney who smashed the ball home.
For the rest of the half, it seemed it was a matter of time before United scored again, particularly through Ronaldo.
But the Portuguese winger could not convert Nani's cross and later side-footed straight at Schwarzer after a slick passing move.
Immediately after the break, Rooney fizzed a drive just too high and wide and once more it seemed United were about to turn the screw.
Middlesbrough might have prevented it had Edwin van der Sar not been equal to Lee Cattermole's rising shot.
But after Rooney produced an exquisite backheel for Tevez to slot the ball into the bottom corner on 55 minutes, the contest was over.
Ronaldo started to stretch his legs again, twisting and turning the Boro defence but not finding a finish to match.
United took off Hargreaves for Darren Fletcher on 66 minutes, and later took the chance to give Rio Ferdinand an extended rest ahead of next Sunday's visit to Arsenal.
It barely affected the pattern of the game, although Boro almost cut United's lead when Downing went close with a curling free-kick.
But instead, Tevez rounded things off for United with 15 minutes to go when his shot looped off Andrew Taylor and beat a disconsolate Schwarzer.
It was the fourth match in succession they had scored four goals - equalling a record which stretched back to 1907.

Robinson admits tear-jerking exit

England full-back Jason Robinson admitted he felt like crying as he ended his rugby career at the Stade de France on Saturday night.
The 33-year-old injured his shoulder on 46 minutes and watched England lose 15-6 to South Africa from the bench.
"I had not foreseen my career ending in such desolation," he said in his Mail on Sunday column.
"I'm not a man given to self-pity, but I felt like crying as I walked off. It was the loneliest walk I can remember."
Robinson was a rugby league icon with Wigan and Great Britain before switching codes to join Sale Sharks in 2000.
He sealed his transition with a stunning try in the first five minutes of the first Lions Test against the Wallabies in 2001 and went on to play 51 times for England, scoring 30 tries including one in the 2003 World Cup final.
"My initial goal was to get in the England team and hopefully do well," said Robinson, who will play one last match for the Barbarians against South Africa on 1 December.

"I hoped to play in the World Cup, but I never imagined playing in two World Cup finals.
"I was lucky to win one of them. It's been an amazing seven years, an amazing 16 years. I achieved far more than I imagined I would."
But Robinson said not even the standing ovation he received in Paris could ease the pain of losing to South Africa.
"Nothing could wipe out that disappointment," he said. "After the euphoria of four years ago, this was a hard defeat to take. Ultimately we know we came up one match short.
"We came to France rubbished by everyone and his dog and were hammered 36-0 by South Africa in a pool game.
"It's one thing to be beaten, it's humiliating to be 'nilled'.
"The squad is overloaded with experience, the commodity you can't buy. Everywhere around the team room you could see men you were proud to go into battle with."
Robinson initially retired from international rugby in 2005, before being persuaded back by new England coach Brian Ashton in January.
But he insists there will be no going back on his decision this time.
"The guys have been giving me stick about retiring but I'll have the last laugh when the temperature has fallen below freezing and the grounds are like concrete," he said.
"I'll text them to tell them I'm sat in my slippers in front of a big fire, dipping a biscuit in my tea.
"I would have said I was walking away from the game without any regrets - until last night."
Robinson's England team-mate Mike Catt admits he is undecided on his international future.
The 36-year-old, who was also a member of the 2003 World Cup-winning squad, was instrumental in England's resurgence in France.
"I will go away and talk to my family about it," Catt said in the Sunday Telegraph.
"I really enjoyed it out there last night and it's not something I'm going to throw away without a good deal of thought."
Several others in England's team - mocked as "Dad's Army" before the tournament - may also have played their last international, including Lawrence Dallaglio, 35, Mark Regan, 35 and Simon Shaw, 34.

Brazilian Grand Prix 2007. Motosport just named: "Kimi Raikkonen"

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen won his first Formula One drivers' championship as Lewis Hamilton's bid came to a dramatic end in the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Hamilton could finish only seventh, ending his attempt to make history by winning the title in his maiden season.
Problems with his McLaren put Hamilton to the back of the field early on.
His team-mate Fernando Alonso's hopes were dashed as he finished third behind Raikkonen and the Finn's Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa.
There was a late twist when it emerged race officials were investigating the fuel used by Williams and BMW Sauber, whose cars filled fourth, fifth and sixth places.
But the stewards decided to impose no penalty.

Had they been disqualified, Hamilton would have moved up to fourth, giving him enough points to win the world title.
Finn Raikkonen, who has won two more races than anyone else this season, won the championship with 110 points, with Alonso and Hamilton tied on 109 points.
Hamilton ended the season in second place on countback, with one more second-place race finish than Alonso.
In the race, things started to go wrong for Hamilton from the start. As Massa eased into the lead from pole position, the Englishman was slow away from his second place on the grid, and was passed by Raikkonen before the first corner.
Then, as they entered the first turn, Alonso drew alongside Hamilton on the outside, claiming the inside line and third place as they went into the second part of the chicane.
Hamilton then unwisely and unnecessarily tried to re-pass his team-mate on the outside into the Subida da Lago corner at the end of the back straight.
He got onto the slippery outside of the track, and slid off into the run-off area, rejoining in eighth place.

Raikkonen sensed Hamilton's early mistake might provide him with an opening to snatch victory.
"I got a good start and was side by side with Felipe," said Raikkonen. "But the main thing was not to race with him, but get past Hamilton.
"I then saw Hamilton go off and I knew maybe we had a chance."
In itself, that error was not enough to end Hamilton's hopes of becoming champion, but worse was soon to come.
Hamilton quickly set about regaining places, but ran into more problems on lap eight, when he slowed almost to a halt as his car slipped out of gear.
The gearbox electronics corrected themselves, enabling Hamilton to get back on his way, but by then had lost more than 40 seconds, and was at the back of the field.

The 22-year-old spent the rest of the afternoon fighting through the field, desperately trying to gain enough places to stop one of his rivals beating him to the world championship.
In an attempt to ease his task, McLaren chose a radical three-stop strategy, the thinking presumably being that with a lighter car he would find it easier to overtake his rivals.
The teams have to use both of two types of tyre during the race.
And McLaren chose to get the slower, softer tyre out of the way early with a short second stint.
That way, he would be on the faster tyre at the end of the race when nearly all the other drivers were on the slower one.
But the strategy did not pay off.
Hamilton did get up into the points during his third stint but, once Raikkonen assumed the lead after passing Massa during the second pit-stop period, the Englishman needed to finish fifth to stay ahead of the Finn.
And although he drove flat out to the end of the race he simply ran out of time.
Alonso's hold on the title he has held for two years ended in a damp squib.
The Spaniard was never in contention for victory in a race that was dominated by the Ferraris.
And although he had the edge on everyone else, third place was not enough to stay ahead of Raikkonen in the standings.

World News today: Turkey vows to defeat PKK rebels

Turkey's leaders have vowed to "pay any price" to defeat terrorism after the latest attack by Kurdish rebels, which killed at least 12 soldiers.

In clashes following the ambush near the Iraqi border, 32 PKK rebels were killed, the military said.
Security officials, ministers and top generals met on Sunday night to discuss whether to attack PKK bases in Iraq.
But despite a strongly worded statement, they did not imply an attack was imminent, a BBC correspondent says.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice had asked Turkey not to take action for a few days.
This, he said, was a sign that Washington was taking Turkey's concerns very seriously.

Turkey has requested that US and Iraqi forces root out PKK rebels from the mountains in Kurdish northern Iraq.
On Wednesday, MPs voted overwhelmingly in support of a motion to allow the military to launch offensives across the border.
It followed an escalation of raids by the PKK - the Kurdistan Workers' Party - as part of its armed campaign for Kurdish autonomy.
Recent attacks blamed on the group have left more than 40 Turkish soldiers and civilians dead.

Protests erupt
"Although it respects Iraq's territorial integrity, Turkey will not tolerate that terrorism be aided and abetted and will not be afraid to pay, whatever the price may be, to protect its rights, its indivisible unity and its citizens," said a statement issued after the emergency meeting on Sunday.

"The fight against the separatist terrorist organisation will be waged with determination until the very end," the statement said.
In the latest attack shortly after midnight on Saturday, a large group of PKK rebels crossed the border from Iraq and staged their ambush near the village of Daglica in Hakkari province, the Turkish military said.
The army said it sent reinforcements and helicopters to the area, fired artillery and launched retaliatory attacks in which 32 guerrillas were killed.
The guerrillas said they had captured several soldiers, but this was denied by the government.
Not far from the scene of the fighting, a minibus was later caught in a landmine explosion, also blamed on the PKK, that injured 10 civilians, the state news agency Anatolia said.
Thousands of Turks joined protests in several cities denouncing the attacks and calling for action against the PKK.

Restraint urged
About 3,000 PKK fighters are believed to be based in northern Iraq near the Turkish border, says the BBC's Sarah Rainsford in Istanbul.

There have been regular clashes in the area since earlier in the year, but the latest attack was one of the deadliest for some time, increasing the pressure on the government from the public and the military for a tough response, our correspondent says.
The United States, Turkey's Nato ally, has called for restraint, fearing that any incursions would destabilise Iraq's most peaceful area - the autonomous Kurdish region in the north.
Iraq, too, has urged Turkey not to strike across the border.
Iraq's president on Sunday called on the PKK rebels to lay down their arms, or to leave Iraq.

Iraqi PM outraged over alleged civilian casualties

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki met Sunday with the top U.S. military commander in Iraq to voice his outrage over the reported deaths of Iraqi civilians during a Sunday morning military raid in Baghdad's Sadr City, a government spokesman told CNN.
Al-Maliki expressed his concerns to Gen. David Petraeus over Iraqi reports that 10 to 15 civilians were killed in the raid, spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh told CNN's "Late Edition."
The U.S. military said its ground forces are "unaware" of civilian deaths in the early morning raid that it said left 49 "criminals" dead.
"There is a great tension in the Iraqi government" over the incident, al-Dabbagh said.
During Sunday's meeting, he said al-Maliki "clearly mentioned that this excessive force ... by the Multi-National Forces used against civilians [is] not creating a good atmosphere."
An Iraqi Interior Ministry source told CNN that 15 civilians were killed -- all men -- and 52 other civilians were wounded, including women and children.
Sadr City's mayor, Hassan Adhab, told Iraqi state TV there were 10 "martyrs" -- including a mother and her three children -- and 42 others were wounded.
Coalition forces were targeting a man they said was a leader in an Iranian-funded kidnapping operation. U.S. military spokeswoman Sgt. Nicole Dykstra told CNN the target was "neither apprehended nor killed."
Adhab described a bloody scene, saying dozens of sheep were killed in the melee, and military aircraft still hovered over the neighborhood hours after the raid.
He blamed American forces for targeting cars carrying people who were heading to work early Sunday.
"We call upon Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to stop such immoral acts in Sadr City," Adhab said.
When asked about the Sadr City raid, the spokesman for the Baghdad Security Plan said Iraqi forces take every measure to avoid civilian casualties.
"If there are innocent civilian casualties in Sadr City or anywhere else -- then that is unfortunate," Brig. Gen. Qassim Atta said. "We hope both the Multi-National Forces and the Iraqi Security Forces demonstrate military restraint and respect human rights."
U.S.-Iraq relations have been strained since a September 16 shooting incident in Baghdad that left 17 civilians dead. Some in Iraq have accused Blackwater USA security contractors, whose guards are assigned to State Department officials, for indiscriminately killing the civilians. The incident is still under investigation.
Sadr City raid
The U.S. military said the joint ground forces were fired upon as they were clearing several buildings in the "target area."
"Supporting aircraft was called in to suppress the enemy fire, killing an estimated six criminals," a military news release stated.
"The operation's objective was an individual reported to be a longtime Special Groups member specializing in kidnapping operations," the military said. "Intelligence indicates he is a well-known cell leader and has previously sought funding from Iran to carry out high profile kidnappings."
The military said its forces were hit by a roadside bomb as they left the area, but the blast did not cause any casualties among coalition forces.
The Iraqi Interior Ministry spokesman said many cars and many homes were damaged in the battle.
"Special Groups are Shiite extremist militant groups trained, funded and supplied primarily by Iran through the Islamic Revolutionary Guards -- Quds Force," said U.S. Army Lt. Justin Cole.
"Special Groups have evolved over the past three years into insurgent elements using a cellular structure and operating independently."
"Special Groups operate throughout Iraq," Cole said. "They plan and execute bombings, kidnappings, sectarian murders and more against Iraqi citizens, Iraqi forces and coalition personnel."

Aston Villa 1 - 0 WestHam (Gardner 24 ')

Aston Villa earned a hard fought 1-0 win over West Ham in Saturday's only 3 O'clock Premier League kick-off.

A 24th minute Craig Gardner free-kick was enough to steer Villa to their fourth successive victory at Villa Park.
Meanwhile, West Ham slumped to their third straight league defeat as they failed to consistently threaten Scott Carson in the Villa goal.
West Ham had the ball in the back of the net, but Henri Camara's effort was disallowed for a blatant handball and this was to be as close as they came.
Villa then struck on 24 minutes when Gardner blasted home a free-kick from 18 yards, which took a late deflection off Daniel Gabbidon to deceive Robert Green in the Hammers goal.
West Ham then enjoyed the majority of possession and were unfortunate not to be awarded a second half penalty when Zat Knight hauled down Carlton Cole in the 18-yard box, but they looked blunt in attack and failed to muster an equaliser.
Villa had chances to seal the points in the first half, despite an improved performance from West Ham in the second 45 minutes.
The pace of Ashley Young caused problems for the Hammers down the left flank and he must have impressed watching England coach Steve McClaren.
Another member of McClaren's latest England squad, Dean Ashton, had a quiet afternoon and picked up a knee injury which could rule him out of the forthcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers with Estonia and Russia.
The first decent opening fell to the home side after five minutes when Young turned past Gabbidon and sent over an inviting low cross, but Luke Moore failed to connect with a volley.
Green was called into meaningful action for the first time when he parried a low drive from Moore after good play by skipper Gareth Barry.
The home side then looked to have strong claims for a penalty after 13 minutes when Lucas Neill appeared to tug at the shirt of Young as he burst into the Hammers box, but it was turned down by referee Steve Tanner.
Villa were looking threatening and an inviting cross from Young picked out Gabriel Agbonlahor whose glancing header was saved by Green.
It was no surprise when Gardner struck for the second time in five days to put Villa ahead after Agbonlahor was brought down right on the edge of the Hammers box by Gabbidon.
West Ham tried to retaliate and Freddie Ljungberg ran at full tilt to meet a deep centre by Matthew Etherington but his flying header was well saved by Carson who was perfectly positioned.
Villa looked dangerous every time the likes of Young and Agbonlahor ran at the West Ham defence.
The visitors were forced to make a substitution when Camara limped out of the action with a hamstring problem to be replaced by Cole.
Villa were soon back on the offensive as they attacked a packed Holte End in the second half and Agbonlahor had a header blocked by Matthew Upson from Young's cross.
Reo-Coker, who was giving the West Ham players little room to manoeuvre in midfield, was yellow-carded for a challenge on Bowyer.
Villa, though, almost gifted West Ham an equaliser after 55 minutes when a poor clearing header by Mellberg went straight to Cole just outside the six-yard box, but he failed to make proper contact and Carson was able to save.
The pace of Villa's game had dropped considerably compared to the opening 45 minutes and O'Neill brought on Shaun Maloney for Moore.
Young appealed in vain for a penalty when Neill appeared to deflect his cross past the post via his right arm.
However, Villa comfortably held on to secure the points and move up to fifth in the league.

PREMIER LEAGUE SATURDAY: Man Utd 4-0 Wigan

Manchester United's attacking trio of Carlos Tevez, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney put their side top of the table for the first time this season.

Initially United were stymied by Wigan but Tevez's darting run and then his strength and composure to drill into the net gave them a second-half lead.
Soon after Ronaldo headed in from close range following a United corner.
United confirmed their dominance when Rooney set up Ronaldo, before the England striker headed in the fourth.

Wigan rarely tested Tomasz Kuszczak, though the United keeper did well to palm away a Luis Antonio Valencia shot after Ronaldo's first goal.
So three more points for United, though this was a win that came at a cost, with Louis Saha pulling out of the game through injury after hurting himself in the pre-match warm-up.

United suffered two more injuries in the first half when Nemanja Vidic and John O'Shea had to go off, two substitutions that disrupted the champions' impressive early rhythm.

But the disruption proved only temporary and two goals in the space of four minutes early in the second half ended Wigan's resistance at Old Trafford.
The champions should have been ahead long before Sir Alex Ferguson was forced to reshuffle his side.
Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland had to react quickly to palm away Salomon Olembe's attempted clearance following a Tevez cross as United began their seige of the visitors' goal.
Ronaldo gathered up the loose ball and looked to be clearly fouled by Michael Brown, but referee Mike Riley waved play on.
Towards the end of the first half United recaptured their early momentum, Ronaldo forcing a save from Kirkland, while Tevez wrong-footed Mario Melchiot before curling the ball over the bar.
United began the second half in ominous mood with Ryan Giggs striking the crossbar with a well-executed half-volley.

Tevez's goal provided ample demonstration why Ferguson was so keen to bring the Argentine to Old Trafford.
The former West Ham forward had the speed and strength to hold off Kevin Kilbane, before drilling a shot into the corner of the net.
Four minutes later Ronaldo headed in from close range after a United corner and the Portuguese forward capped a fine performance with a cool finish after he had been set up by Rooney.
The England international completed the scoring with a header after Danny Simpson had crossed from the right.
Wigan deployed a five-man midfield and Marcus Bent as a lone striker, a formation that rarely tested United's rejigged defence.
Josip Skoko went close with a shot, while Patrice Evra reacted quickly to hook the ball away from Paul Scharner as the Austrian prepared to shoot.
During the second half Jason Koumas's left-footed shoot went narrowly wide, before Kuszczak saved from Valencia.

-Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson on his team's ability to cope with the Vidic/O'Shea injuries:"Considering all the things that happened I think we've done fantastically well.
"I was very pleased with the football in the second half.
"We had 10 players missing but great credit to the players who played today.
"We speeded the game up in the second half, the flow of the game was much better. It's coming together."

-Wigan manager Chris Hutchings:"We had a game plan which worked well in the first half.
"But as as soon as they scored the first goal they upped the tempo and they could have scored a couple more.
"It's always difficult but while it's 1-0 you have always got a chance. I'm disappointed that we lost our shape."

Background in Vietnam today.

WHO helps promote traffic safety in Vietnam

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced Wednesday that it will dole out US$860,000 for Vietnam to use on public's awareness programs centering on traffic safety.

Courses that encourage the use of helmets and seat belts, drunk driving and road safety techniques would all be on offer, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) quoted Jean-Marc Olive, WHO Resident Representative, as saying in a press release.
The drive would also focus on improving the capability of law makers and public health workers, the WHO official said.
The release quoted Trinh Quan Huan, Deputy Minister of Health, as saying that on average more than 11,000 deaths and tens of thousands more injuries were reported annually from road traffic accidents.
“Vietnamese youth in the age group of 15-24 accounts for 20 percent of the total national population, yet they account for 40 percent of total severe road traffic crashes," Huan said.
The Asian Development Bank estimated a staggering yearly economic loss of $885 million from road traffic accidents in Vietnam, said the release.
A survey on casualties conducted at the Viet-Duc Hospital in Hanoi found out that 79.18 percent of victims of traffic accidents did not wear helmets, fasten safety belts or use other safety equipment while traveling on roads.
"Wearing a high-quality helmet is in fact the single most effective way of reducing head injuries and fatalities resulting from motorcycle and bicycle crashes,” Jean-Marc Olive said.
“Effective enforcement of traffic laws, however, needs to be sustained over a long period of time in order to bring about the necessary change in people's behavior and drastically reduce the needless loss of life on Vietnam's roads," he added.
Hospitals also voiced an alarm on the provision of inadequate first aid to traffic accident victims, reporting that 55 percent of the sufferers have not yet been administered by on-the-spot treatment.

AC Milan forward Kaka has been named FIFPro world player of the year.
The 25-year-old Brazilian claimed the accolade after 45,000 members of the players' union voted in the awards, which are in their third year.
He said: "I am humbled to receive such an honour. To follow my good friend and such a great player as Ronaldinho makes this a very special award."
England's John Terry and Steven Gerrard, were in the World XI with Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo.
Kaka was instrumental in Milan's Champions League triumph, sealed with a victory over Liverpool in Athens in May, ending as top scorer with 10 goals including three in the semi-final win over Manchester United.
It was the seventh time the Italian giants had claimed the crown.
He was the subject of an unsuccessful bid from Real Madrid in the close season, and was also a driving force in helping Milan to finish fourth in Serie A last term despite an eight-point deduction for match-fixing.
Kaka missed Brazil's Copa America victory in July because he opted out of the tournament to rest.

Confirmed Miss Universe 2008 in Vietnam

Khanh Hoa province has officially given CIAT and Viet CEO approval to host Miss Universe 2008 in Nha Trang city next May,
said Vo Lam Phi, Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee. According to Mr. Phi, the People’s Committee will ask the Prime Minister to instruct related ministries including the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Culture,
Sports and Tourism to cooperate with Khanh Hoa province in its efforts to upgrade infrastructure, especially Cam Ranh International airport, pior to the event.

At present, Nha Trang city has 6,000 hotel rooms rated from one to five stars, in addition to luxury hotels like Vinpearl, Sun Rise, Ana Mandara, and Evason Hideaway, basically meeting Miss Universe Organisation’s requirement for hotels.

The 5,000-seat water Vinpearl Stage, however, will need to be expanded and upgraded into a 7,500-seat one.
Mr. Phi said whether the 2008 Miss Universe contest would actually take place in Nha Trang or not would ultimately depend on involved parties’ financial abilities.
The initial amount requested by Miss Universe Organisation, US$15million,
will be paid by units other than Khanh Hoa province itself, said he. Miss Universe is the second-biggest international beauty pageant after Miss World.
Chairwoman Paula Mary Shugart conducted an investigation tour of Vietnam in August,
and shortly after responded with a letter saying Vietnam would be chosen to host the event after it fulfilled certain requirements.

HEALTH: Viet Nam gets tougher on disease prevention

Ha Noi (VNA) – The National Steering Committee for Bird Flu Prevention and Control has urged localities to hasten measures to prevent diseases on poultry and animals. The committee pointed to a severe lack of public awareness, subjectivity of local authorities and inefficient supervision and detection systems as the main reasons behind the complex development of several kinds of diseases. A number of localities have not taken appropriate measures quickly in order to prevent the further spreading of the diseases when they occur. In an attempt to better the prevention and control of diseases on animals and poultry in the last few months of the year, the committee also asked the chairmen of provincial and municipal People’s Committees nationwide to speed up awareness programmes and take preventive measures to mitigate the losses of farmers, ensure sustainable husbandry development and protect public health.

Big Vietnam firms take risks on land, stocks: report

Some of Vietnam's big firms rely heavily on risky speculation in land and equities to generate profits as they adapt to global competition, UN economists said Monday.

A survey of 200 of the largest firms, most of them state-run, found them to be "dynamic and ambitious", but lacking sufficient help from government to gain access to export markets, acquire new technologies and train workers.
"One cause for concern is that state-owned enterprises are drawing down most of the investment but they are not producing many jobs," United Nations Development Program economist Jonathan Pincus told a news conference.
Vietnam joined the World Trade Organization in January, a milestone in its 20-year-long policy of creating a market economy.
Vietnam's biggest companies are small in global terms, but an estimated $8.3 billion in foreign direct investment pledges has this year poured into an economy growing at over 8 percent.
"The incentive structure at present encourages firms to invest in assets like land and shares where they can make quick returns," Pincus said. "That doesn't mean much to the overall productivity of the Vietnamese economy."
Real estate prices are at record highs and the main Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange is up 44 percent this year.
Policies such as land tax, property tax and capital gains tax do not exist in Vietnam as they did in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan when they were at similar stages of development. Big conglomerates helped fuel the growth of those economies.
Vietnam's big companies should invest in core businesses to improve technology and products and increase the need for infrastructure and capital, the economists said.
Since WTO entry, Vietnam has attracted further investment in electronic components assembly and other areas.
The year-long survey "Top 200: Industrial Strategies of Vietnam's Largest Firms" found that many companies were dissatisfied with the education and training of Vietnamese institutions.
The young workforce – about half of Vietnam's 85 million people are under 35 – was considered trainable and hard-working by senior management, according to the report.
The research included state-owned, private and joint venture foreign companies and were chosen based on labor, assets, turnover and tax.

Man Utd 1-0 Roma

Wayne Rooney's first goal of the season fired Manchester United to victory against Roma at Old Trafford.
There was to be no repeat of the 7-1 drubbing handed out to Roma in April by United in last season's quarter-final.
Chances were at a premium with Cristiano Ronaldo and Francesco Totti restricted to long-range efforts.
Rooney broke the deadlock with a sharp 15-yard finish after he was set up by Nani to leave United three points clear at the top of Group F.

United seem to have a habit of winning 1-0 and once again they failed to hit anything like top form against a resolute Roma outfit.
The entire match was a tactical affair in which United demonstrated plenty of intent but very little of the attacking verve which served them so well last season.
Roma, who were knocked off the top of Serie A on Saturday when they slumped to a 4-1 home defeat to Inter Milan, were content to soak up what United threw at them.

Both sides went into the game with stand-in goalkeepers - but neither was seriously tested with long-distance shots from Francesco Totti and Cristiano Ronaldo causing few alarms.

United - with Louis Saha starting a game for the first time since February - began passing the ball around crisply but Roma quickly smothered the Red Devils with Daniele de Rossi brilliantly screening the visiting defence.
Totti's 30-yard free-kick evaded the wall and Tomasz Kuszczak, in for the injured Edwin van der Sar, needed two attempts to cushion the ball to his chest.
United should have gone ahead on 33 minutes when Nani got round the back of the Roma defence only for a carefree Rooney to volley over from a good position.
That apart, Sir Alex Ferguson will have been disappointed to see his side lacking momentum in wide positions with Ronaldo and Nani dropping deep far too often.
If United were too relaxed in the first period, they immediately threatened at the start of the second when a Ronaldo raid down the right was cleared by a relieved Phillipe Mexes in front of his own goal.
Roma spurned their best chance when Giuly set up Totti, who blazed over the advancing Kuszczak from close range five minutes after the restart.
Alberto Aquilani fired another warning to United moments later when he fired narrowly wide from the edge of the box as the Italians sensed a goal was possible.
United were still struggling to get sufficient men forward with Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick content to sit deep in the crowded midfield and unable to make their mark on proceedings.

Rooney produced a bright moment when he cut inside the left side of the Roma defence before unleashing a powerful low shot which Curci pushed away for a corner.
Carlos Tevez replaced the tiring Saha and United soon had the ball in the net when the Argentine found Ronaldo, who audaciously back-heeled home from an offside position.
Rooney clinched victory 20 minutes from time with an exquisite finish to raise the roof off Old Trafford.
Carrick found Nani and he cleverly played the ball through to Rooney who turned outside and found the net off the inside of the far post with a crisp 15-yard shot.
Tevez almost made it 2-0 with a sizzling 22-yard effort while Kuszczak did well at the other end to collect a well-struck Simone Perrotta effort.
Roma should have levelled three minutes from time when Totti played the ball back for Mauro Esposito, who carelessly blazed wide from 10 yards with United stretched at the back.
Ferguson said beforehand that he would settle for a 1-0 win. It was not always pretty but it went to script and United are well on their way towards qualifying for the knockout stages.

Women's World Cup Final 2007: Germany Women 2-0 Brazil Women

Germany edged out Brazil in a gripping match to become the first team to retain the Women's World Cup.
Brazil's Daniela crashed a fine 20-yard volley against the post early on.
But Germany went ahead when Sandra Smisek showed great composure to pick out captain Birgit Prinz, whose scuffed shot crept under keeper Andreia.
Brazil then missed a penalty when Marta saw her shot saved by Nadine Angerer and the Germans sealed the win when Simone Laudehr headed home late on.
A 2-0 scoreline was harsh on a Brazilian side who played with flair and creativity and posed problems throughout.
The South Americans, surprise finalists after their shock 4-0 hammering of USA in the semi-finals, were looking to be crowned champions for the first time.
And in a first half played at a ferocious pace at the Hongkou Stadium in Shanghai, they looked the more likely to break the deadlock.
The pace and trickery of Marta, Daniela and Cristiane always looked like breaching a German defence who had not conceded a single goal at the World Cup.
Formiga squandered a wonderful early chance following a dangerous free-kick, which Angerer did well to beat away, and Marta's direct running was a constant threat.
The Brazilians' best chance fell to Daniela, whose sublime volley from the edge of the box beat Angerer but canoned back to safety off the post.
But the Germans also had their opportunities, the impressive Kerstin Garefrekes powering an early shot wide at the near post and Smisek wastefully curling an effort over the bar with her left foot.
And Germany made Brazil pay for not taking their chances when Prinz's first-time strike somehow bobbled under Andreia after fine work by Smisek on the right wing.
The Brazilians failed to let that affect their confidence and continued to press forward.
Their efforts looked like being rewarded when Cristiane won a penalty after racing on to a through-ball and was bundled to the ground by Linda Bresonik.
But Angerer made a superb stop to deny Marta from the spot-kick and minutes later she showed just why she had such a remarkable defensive record by pulling off a fantstic diving stop to keep out Daniela's free-kick with the help of the post.
Germany confirmed their victory in the dying moments when Laudehr met Renate Lingor's superbly flighted corner.
-Germany coach Silvia Neid: "Brazil had more of the game, but we worked hard as a team, especially in defence.
"In the second half, we scored at the right time, and after that our players realized they could hold this game.
"After Nadine stopped the penalty, I was pretty sure we wouldn't concede a goal."

-Brazil coach Jorge Barcellos: "We had a lot of chances. Germany had fewer chances, but when they got them they scored.
"Even though we lost, this result of making the final will bring more investors and will bring a lot of benefits to women's football in Brazil."

Tottenham 4-4 Aston Villa
Younes Kaboul completed an amazing comeback by Tottenham as they fought back from 4-1 down to hold Aston Villa.
Dimitar Berbatov nodded Spurs in front but Martin Laursen levelled after Paul Robinson's error, then made it 2-1 when he deflected in Zat Knight's header.
Gabriel Agbonlahor drilled home a third and Craig Gardner's low free-kick made it 4-1 before Pascal Chimbonda replied after Jermain Defoe had hit the post.
Robbie Keane's penalty made it 4-3 before Kaboul's last-gasp leveller.
Tottenham remain in the bottom three of the Premier League but their under-fire boss Martin Jol can take heart from the way his side responded when facing almost certain defeat.
But while the manner in which the home side earned their point will ease the pressure on Jol, he will know he must solve the defensive problems which meant they had to work so hard to get something from this game.
Spurs had celebrated their 125th anniversary with a parade of legends before kick-off but the party did not continue for long once the game was underway.
True, Jol's side were looking dangerous going forward but Tottenham's continuing difficulty in dealing with Villa's attacks meant that, just two minutes after Berbatov rose to nod the home side ahead, the visitors were level.
Robinson inexplicably dropped Gareth Barry's corner and the ball bounced kindly for Laursen, who smashed his shot into the unguarded net.
Villa's second goal was almost as embarrassing for the Tottenham defence, a quick free-kick catching them unawares and, from another Barry cross, Knight headed the ball against Laursen, through Robinson's legs and into the net.
Things got even worse for Spurs before the break when Gabriel Agbonlahor latched on to a clearance from Villa keeper Scott Carson, held off Michael Dawson and fired into the bottom corner.
And when Robinson failed to keep out Craig Gardner's low free-kick early in the second half, things looked ominous for Spurs and for Jol.
But Tottenham never gave up and, with Defoe brought off the bench, they belatedly began to threaten again.
The England striker hit the post before Chimbonda netted from the rebound to give his side hope, then Robbie Keane brought the score back to 4-3 from the spot after Marlon Harewood clumsily fouled substitute Darren Bent.
It still looked like Villa would hold on but Kaboul had other ideas, slamming home in stoppage time after Villa failed to clear a corner.
