News Other football Europa League Thursday Review

There were wins for Fulham, Everton, Valencia, Hamburg and Lazio. Celtic and Rapid Vienna drew 1-1 in the latest round of the Europa League on Thursday.

Lazio posted a dazzling 4-0 victory at Levski Sofia for their first win in Europa League Group G.

Beaten by Red Bull Salzburg in their opening pool game and struggling in Serie A, the Italian side produced a much-improved play against a toothless Levski at the Georgi Asparuchov Stadium.

After a tight start, Matuzalem opened the scoring midway through the first half before Mauro Zarate added the second on the stroke of half-time.

Second-half goals from Mourad Meghni and Tommaso Rocchi crowned a fine win for the Rome outfit.

In the same pool, Salzburg's dream start to the competition continued tonight as they claimed the prized scalp of Villarreal with a 2-0 home win thanks to goals in either half from Marc Janko and Somen Tchoyi.

Everton shrugged off the loss of 10 first-team players to record a superb 2-1 victory at BATE Borisov in Group I thanks to Tim Cahill's goal 13 minutes from time.

In the process, David Moyes' side have taken a massive step towards securing a place in the next stage after their second successive group win.

Cahill capped a brilliant comeback after Marouane Fellaini had cancelled out Dmitri Likhtarovich's opener to haul the Toffees level in the 68th minute.

AEK Athens bounced back from their thrashing at the hands of Everton a fortnight ago as they edged out Benfica 1-0 in the Greek capital tonight. Daniel Majstorovic's strike two minutes before the break was the difference.

Werder Bremen moved three points clear at the top of Group L after seeing off Athletic Bilbao 3-1 despite losing Peter Niemeyer to a red card just five minutes after he appeared as a second-half substitute.

The German side led 2-0 at the break thanks to a brilliant volley from Aaron Hunt and a well-worked effort from defender Naldo, and although Fernando Llorente pulled a late goal back for Athletic, it was not enough for the visitors and they conceded a third almost immediately when Torsten Frings slotted home from the penalty spot.

Austria Vienna had to settle for a point in their Group L clash with Portuguese side Nacional.

Milenko Acimovic missed a penalty 10 minutes into the game for the hosts and Ruben Micael gave the Madeirans the lead after 35 minutes. An away win looked on the cards until Brazil-born Schumacher tied the game in the 76th minute.

Last season's UEFA Cup champions Shakhtar Donetsk took control of Group J with a 4-1 victory over Partizan Belgrade.

Two goals in each half, with Luiz Adriano, Jadson and Yaroslav Rakitskiy adding to Marko Lomic's 24th-minute own-goal, ensured victory before a late consolation from Adem Ljajic.

Also in the pool, Ivan Perisic's stoppage-time equaliser gave Club Brugge a 2-2 draw at Toulouse.

Joseph Akpala put the Belgian side ahead seven minutes into the second half but their lead lasted just two minutes before Moussa Sissoko celebrated getting his second France call-up today with the equaliser.

It looked as though Andre-Pierre Gignac's 84th-minute goal would hand all three points to Toulouse but Perisic levelled in the dying seconds.

Senegalese striker Dame Ndoye's first-half goal proved the difference as FC Copenhagen recorded a 1-0 home win over Sparta Prague in Group K.

Otman Bakkal's first-half header was enough for PSV Eindhoven to claim their opening win of this year's competition at home to CFR Cluj in the same pool.

In Group H, Alex scored the only goal as Fenerbahce bounced back from their opening Europa League defeat to FC Twente with a 1-0 win at Sheriff Tiraspol in a low-key encounter.

Steve McClaren's Twente, meanwhile, were held to a disappointing goalless home draw by Steaua Bucharest.

There were goals aplenty in Group B as Valencia edged Genoa 3-2 and Lille romped to a 5-1 win at Slavia Prague.

Los Che fell behind to a Sergio Floccari, but stormed out of the blocks in the second half and quickfire goals from David Silva and Nikola Zigic put them in front.

Houssine Kharja drew the Italian side level from the penalty spot but the match was finally settled when David Villa was tripped in the box with 10 minutes left and applied the finish from 12 yards.

Lille also came from behind to thrash Slavia.

Tjani Belaid's early penalty had the French side on the back foot, but they were back on level terms when Marek Suchy turned the ball into his own net early in the second half.

Pierre Alain-Frau then put them ahead with 20 minutes to go before the floodgates opened in the dying stages. Gervinho got the third with five minutes to go and Arnaud Souquet added another before Gervinho grabbed the fifth.

Claudio Ranieri got the result he was after from his Roma players after they ended a run of disappointing results with a 2-0 victory over CSKA Sofia in Group E.

The win was secured with two goals in three first-half minutes from Stefano Okaka Chuka and Simone Perrotta.

In the same pool, Danny Murphy's 57th-minute winner saw Fulham sink Basle to halt their three-match losing streak and surge to the top of the standings.

Jonathan Legear's late equaliser maintained Anderlecht's unbeaten start to Group A and denied Martin Jol's Ajax their first pool win this evening.

The game at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadion had looked to be heading for a goalless draw until substitute Dennis Rommedahl broke the deadlock 18 minutes from time.

Jelle Van Damme was dismissed in the 82nd minute, but the hosts made light of their man disadvantage and nicked a 1-1 draw through Legear four minutes later.

Anderlecht remained top of the pool, a point clear of Dinamo Zagreb who were 3-0 winners at FC Timisoara.

Milan Badelj was the star of the show, scoring the first goal and laying on the other two for Jorge Sammir and Pedro Morales.

In Group C, Hamburg got their campaign up and running with a 4-2 win over Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Two goals in the first 12 minutes from Marcus Berg had them in control but substitute Itay Shechter pulled the Israeli side back into the game.

Eljero Elia made it 3-1 only for Samuel Yeboah to reduce the deficit again. Ze Roberto missed a penalty for the German side just before the midway point in the second half - but then found the target to make sure of the victory.

Celtic, meanwhile, were held 1-1 by old foes Rapid Vienna at Parkhead.

The home side were shocked to lose a goal to Nikica Jelavic after only three minutes but recovered to level in the 20th minute through Scott McDonald.

Panathinaikos midfielder Giorgos Karagounis decided an underwhelming Group F match against Dinamo Bucharest with a late strike in front of an empty Stadion Dinamo.

Dinamo had been ordered to play the match behind closed doors after the crowd trouble that forced the abandonment of their play-off against Liberec earlier in the competition.

Also in Group F, Sturm Graz fought hard to hold favourites Galatasaray to a 1-1 draw in Turkey.

Daniel Beichler gave the Austrians the lead in first-half stoppage-time but Frank Rijkaard's Gala levelled through Milan Baros in the 63rd minute.

In Group D, a superb second-half rearguard earned Latvian champions FK Ventspils a point at home to Heerenveen.

Sporting Lisbon's Adrien Silva had an eventful evening, scoring the game's only goal in the 19th minute and then being sent off in stoppage time against Hertha Berlin.

Champions League news:

Manchester United vs Wolfsburg Preview

Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has tipped Wayne Rooney to gatecrash the elite trio currently monopolising world football.

Rooney is set to make his 50th European appearance tomorrow when Manchester United entertain German champions Wolfsburg in Champions League Group B.

His first three goals for United came in a dramatic debut-night hat-trick against Fenerbahce in the Champions League, heralding his £27million arrival from Everton.

Although there have been moments Rooney has cause to regret, not least his red card for sarcastically applauding referee Kim Milton Nielsen in Villarreal, at no point has the 23-year-old given Ferguson any other belief than he is destined for the top.

The United boss feels Rooney has some work to do before he can be put into the same bracket as Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo, who were crowned world player of the year in the last two seasons, and Lionel Messi, who is set to receive the honour this autumn.

But he has no doubts the Merseysider will get there eventually.

"Wayne could easily get to that level," said Ferguson.

"It was a pretty remarkable feat to get that hat-trick and his progress has never disappointed us at any point since.

"When we signed him as a kid, we thought he would become a really top player. Without question he is going in that direction.

"He is blessed with some ingredients only great footballers have.

"He has a great determination and hunger to win every match and every training session. That will never change.

"Sometimes there is criticism about the amounts footballers get paid. But when you see the effort he puts in, he is worth every penny.

"He plays as if he means it. It is a wonderful thing to have."

Wolfsburg coach Armin Veh, meanwhile, insists his team "will not hide" at Old Trafford tomorrow.

The Wolves stunned German football last season by holding off the challenges of far better known rivals to clinch the Bundesliga.

Their reward is a Champions League debut and, after opening their campaign by defeating CSKA Moscow, they are now preparing to enter one of the citadels of the game.

Veh admits he cannot be sure how his team will react, but he does not expect any sense of inferiority. And neither does he feel they will be scared.

"Old Trafford is a special ground and Manchester United is a very special club," said Veh.

"They have played over 150 games in this competition and we have only had a couple.

"But we will not hide and I won't be losing any sleep thinking about it.

"It is impossible to say for certain whether the players will be inspired or afraid. But I do know we cannot afford to wait until Manchester United have scored four or five goals before we start to impose our own style on the match."

Veh is not expecting a problem. In fact, he feels a myth has grown up around Old Trafford.

"When people talk about atmospheres, the best ones are in Germany," he added.

"We experience those crowds every week, so in describing the atmosphere at Old Trafford, it is more to do with the legend of United, rather than the stadium itself."

Barcelona 2-0 Dynamo Kiev

Barcelona made it four points from two games in their Champions League group after confidently seeing off Dynamo Kiev.

Lionel Messi put the Catalan giants on their way with the opening goal in the 26th minute before half-time substitute Pedro Rodriguez sealed a fairly comfortable victory with Barca's second 14 minutes from time.

Pep Guardiola's side, who drew 0-0 with Inter Milan in their opening match, now take over the Group F leadership from Dynamo, who beat Rubin Kazan 3-1 first time out but were outclassed tonight.

Barca led 1-0 at the break, but they should have been out of sight by that point after creating a series of chances that saw Dynamo goalkeeper Olexandr Shovkovskiy working over time.

Dynamo gave as good as they got in the opening stages but Barca soon started to dominate possession and territory and they made the breakthrough in the 25th minute.

Ibrahimovic was the outstanding player of the first half, but it was Messi who put Barca ahead as he picked up a good pass from Xavi, cut inside Leandro Almeida before rifling a low shot past Shovkovskiy.

Shovkovskiy will probably feel he could have done more with the effort as the ball squirmed under him, even though Messi's effort was well struck.

That goal was the catalyst for a sustained period of Barca pressure that saw the treble winners create at least four very good opportunities.

The first saw Messi denied by the onrushing Shovkovskiy in the 27th minute following a brilliant Ibrahimovic backheel, while five minutes later the Dynamo goalkeeper did well again to race out any deny Ibrahimovic after Xavi's perfectly-weighted pass had put the Sweden international clear.

Xavi then saw two of his own efforts saved by the busy Shovkovskiy as Guardiola's men continued to dominate.

The hosts almost suffered a surprise setback just before half-time when, against the run of play, Dynamo got the ball into the back of the Barca net following a rare foray forward.

However, Ognjen Vukojevic's celebrations were cut short due to an infringement and Barca could breathe again.

And it was back to business as usual soon after that as Shovkovskiy was again called upon on the stroke of half-time to make a crucial double save to deny Messi when one-on-one and then tip over Ibrahimovic's acrobatic volley from the rebound.

If anything, Barca were even more dominant after the break, although they found clear-cut chances harder to come by as Dynamo packed their defence.

On thing that did not change was the massive contributions of Ibrahimovic and Shovkovskiy for their respective sides.

Ibrahimovic twice tested Shovkovskiy, the first with a header and then with a low shot that the Dynamo stopper did superbly to push away one-handed, before the former Inter Milan hitman turned provider to help Barca finally get the two-goal cushion they were desperately seeking.

Ibrahimovic's low pass into the area found Pedro, and he controlled the ball, shifted it onto his left foot and slotted a low shot just inside the far post.

That was enough to guarantee the points would be staying at the Nou Camp, although Dynamo almost set a few hearts fluttering in the 87th minute when captain Artem Milevskiy's lob landed on the roof of the net after latching onto a poor headed back-pass by Sergio Busquets.

Football news: Champions League Tuesday Review

Jose Mourinho was furious as he saw Inter Milan limp to a 1-1 draw against Rubin Kazan in a match his side finished with ten men.

Rubin took the lead in the 11th minute thanks to Alejandro Dominguez but the hosts gifted Dejan Stankovic the equaliser on the half hour.

The hosts were somewhat unfortunate not to take all three points after playing out the final half hour at a feverish pace following the dismissal of Mario Balotelli for a second bookable offence.

Barcelona are top of Group F after a 2-0 win over Dynamo Kiev, who fall to second.

Lionel Messi put the holders ahead after 26 minutes when Andreas Iniesta's pass found him on the right. Messi then cut in and sent in a low left-footed shot into the net.

Rodriguez Pedrito doubled the lead when he stroked the ball past the goalkeeper following a pass by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

In Group E, Lyon got their second win from two games as they beat Debrecen 4-0.

Debrecen went behind after just three minutes against Lyon when Kim Kallstrom volleyed in Miralem Pjanic's corner and things went from bad to worse for the Hungarian side when Pjanic scored from a free-kick 10 minutes later.

It was all over after just 24 minutes with Pjanic involved again. This time his corner was met by captain Sidney Govou whose header deflected off Peter Czvitkovics and into the net.

Bafetimbi Gomis made it four six minutes after half-time to leave the French team top of the group.

Fiorentina beat Liverpool 2-0 with two first-half goals from Stevan Jovetic with the Italians pipping the Anfield club for second at the moment.

Sevilla are top of Group G after a comprehensive 4-1 victory at Rangers who languish in bottom spot.

Abdoulay Konko broke the deadlock on 50 minutes with Adriano, Luis Fabiano and Frederic Kanoute adding to the tally in a devastating 10-minute period.

Nacho Novo scored a late consolation for the hosts at Ibrox.

Unirea Urzxiceni and Stuttgart shared a 1-1 draw.

The Germans took an early lead when a Timo Gebhart challenge saw the ball run loose to Sergar Tasci, who fired into the net.

However, the hosts levelled three minutes after half-time when Dacian Varga curled a shot into the far left corner.

Arsenal lead Group H after a 2-0 win over Olympiacos thanks to goals by Robin van Persie and Andrey Arshavin.

AZ Alkmaar took the lead in their match against Standard Liege shortly after half-time when Mounir El Hamdaoui collected the ball and in one movement, turned and sent a shot into the net.

However, Mouss Traore levelled for Standard in the final minute for a 1-1 draw.

Pele King talk about Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo told to stay put by Pele

Pele
Pele believes Cristiano Ronaldo should stay loyal to Man Utd

Pele insists Cristiano Ronaldo should forget about moving to Real Madrid and honour his Manchester United contract.

The Brazil legend also dismissed Fifa president Sepp Blatter's claim that there is "modern slavery" in football and Ronaldo should be free to move.

Pele, in Stoke for a charity match for the Gordon Banks Foundation, said: "You are a slave if you work without a contract or you don't get paid.

"If you have a contract then in any job you have to finish the contract."

Pele added: "I think that when he finishes his contract, then he should be free to go wherever he wants to go."

Ronaldo has four years left on his Old Trafford contract and is currently recovering from ankle surgery which will rule him out of the start of next season.

Former England goalkeeper Banks accused Cristiano Ronaldo of showing a lack of respect to Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Banks said he could not understand why Ronaldo, who scored 42 goals for United last season, would want to move away from Old Trafford to Real Madrid.

He said: "I can't understand why he said he felt he was being treated like a slave. If he has just signed a new contract then he should respect his manager and honour it. It's stupid.

"I don't understand what the problem is. He plays for a team that has just won the European Cup and the Premier League. He plays for his country. What more does he want?

"It's like anything in life. If a businessman signs a contract then he has to honour it. It' s no different than a professional footballer."

Banks was speaking at a press conference ahead of a charity match in his honour on Saturday when a Banks XI will take on a Pele XI at Stoke's Britannia Stadium.

The former England keeper pulled off arguably the best save in history from a Pele header at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.
